The Language Arts program at Raney focuses on the study of language development, literature, composition, listening, and speaking and follows the adopted California Content Standards for language arts. Raney's Language Arts department integrates reading and literature skills with the study of language mechanics, writing, spelling, and vocabulary to create a well-rounded, balanced language arts program. The curriculum centers around the literature proved in the state-adopted textbooks, along with outside sources. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing permeate the curriculum, as these skills are essential to learning in every content area.
Our desire is that our students will be readers and writers and that they will make reading and writing part of their everyday lives. They will need good language skills to gain more understanding of themselves and to make sense of their world. As a means of encouraging them to self-reflect upon their lives, they will engage in such activities as telling and hearing stories, reading novels and poetry, keeping journals, and writing essays. It is the desire of Raney's Language Arts department that our students develop a love of literature and writing that will last forever.
